The work of Hywel Swrdwal and his two sons Ieuan and Dafydd are published in this volume. Their poetry typifies that of the fifteenth century. For the most part it consists of eulogy and elegy, and it is evident that the family identified with a class of Marcher nobility with Yorkist loyalties and local family ties. As a result, the poems prove to be a valuable source for the history of the period, especially such poems as the elegies to William Herbert of Raglan and that to his half brother, Watcyn Fychan. In these two poems the poets’ patriotic sentiments are most clearly evident as they reveal many of their ideas and prejudices.
